State High Point # 39

Eagle Mountain, Minnesota

At 701 meters, Eagle Mountain is the highest natural point in Minnesota. Made of granite, the peak is part of a large rock formation called the Duluth Complex. The granite formed when magma cooled very slowly, miles under the earth’s surface. This slow cooling allowed the rock to form hard crystals, making it resistant to erosion by glaciers.

Despite its low elevation, Eagle Mountain has a surprising 1,321′ of clean prominence, as well as 437 miles of isolation from the nearest higher ground (west of the peak in the central region of North Dakota). In fact, the Eagle Mountain is the 9th-most isolated peak in the entire United States. The peak is located only 15 miles from Minnesota’s lowest point (Lake Superior, 600′).
